• 20.09.05 | Encore Hollywood takes Backstreet boys back to the '80s - by Annemarie |
When Director Marc Klasfeld approached Encore Hollywood for help in posting the new Backstreet Boys video Just Want You to Know, he asked the facility’s visual effects team to do their worst—and they obliged. Aiming to replicate the look of a low budget rock documentary of the 1980s, artists devised a number of clever digital tricks to artfully degrade, corrupt and decay the look of the video, the second release from the group’s platinum-selling album, Never Gone. Conceived by Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson, the video is an homage to Heavy Metal Parking Lot, John Heyn’s classic 1986 documentary about fans attending a Judas Priest concert. In Just Want You to Know, the Backstreet Boys are cast in dual roles, as members of the heavy metal band Sphynkter, and as a quintet of the band’s hardcore fans. Read more |

Despite a five year break between albums, and being 12 years into their career, perennial teen idols the Backstreet Boys have still got it. And if you're not convinced, there are 13,000 girls who will tell you otherwise. If they can still speak today that is. It was non-stop screams of delight from the moment the Boys took the stage at the Bell Centre last night. Actually, from before that moment. Anticipation was treated with due reverence once the lights went down. Drums pounded, cinematic strings, erratic lasers abd smoke built the tension. Finally, the stairs in the centre of the stage lit up. From the darkness they emerged, Kevin, Howie, AJ, Nick and Brian. Locked in step, in a V formation, they made their descent. A couple of explosions later, they broke into The Call, off their 2000 album, Black and Blue. Read more |

The Backstreet Boys went away for a while but now they're back, older, wiser, even a little beaten up and vulnerable. And all the more loveable as far as the 8,000 glowstick-waving teenaged girls were concerned at last night's Corel Centre show. For the first time in five years, the Backstreet Boys have a new album, ironically titled Never Gone. Their first since 2000's Black and Blue, proves that, love 'em or hate 'em, the Boys have transcended the genre they helped to create in the first place. I'm not going to argue about whether bubblegum boy bands in general -- and BSB in particular -- is the best or worst thing to happen to American pop music, at least since Mitsou or the CB radio song craze of the mid-1970s. For the more than 8,000 fans, the question is not why, but why not? Read more |
• 13.09.05 | Boys deliver spectacular stage show - by Annemarie |
The Backstreet Boys have hit the road they hope returns them to superstardom after a four-year absence from the pop music scene. Apparently, the former teen idols were sorely missed by more than 8,000 of their local and very loud fans -- mostly females in the adolescent-to-early 20s demographic -- who packed the John Labatt Centre last night. Leaders of the boy-band wave that ruled the second half of the 1990s, the Florida quintet sold 73 million albums world-wide before fading from public view in 2001. Read more |

Catch the boys at their spoofy best - by Annemarie |
Backstreet Boys is going for an image makeover. They have been known for their goody goody chocolate boy image and are responsible for the whole boy band look which dominated the 90s. What with their flowing locks and cute dimples they were the 'ohhh sooo' cute boys of the music industry. Gone was the glam rock image of the 80s with long hair and frayed jeans. But this time around The Boys themselves have done a reinvention act. With their new album Nevermind, not only did they change their sound from the bubblegum pop to an acoustic soft rock; with their newest video, they have gone for a complete image makeover. • 09.09.05 | Backstreet boys move beyond pop culture - by Annemarie |
MARYSVILLE -- The Backstreet Boys' performance at Sleep Train Amphitheatre Aug. 31 proved the boy band is here to stay. It was a night composed of memories, pop-culture and plenty of screaming. Nearly a decade after the release of their first album, and following a three-year break, the Backstreet Boys are on tour again promoting their latest album "Never Gone." Anticipating the entrance of the five singers -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson -- the audience geared up by listening to hard rock music from the '80s and reading text messages sent to the Backstreet Boys from fans. As the messages "Marry Me Nick" and "I love you AJ" scrolled by on three large screens, the energy and cheering in the amphitheater felt like a high school football game. Read more |
• 08.09.05 | Concert review; straight.com - by Annemarie |
It can’t be easy being an aging Backstreet Boy, but the band’s Never Gone album is a clear statement of intent. Backstreet’s back, indeed. The new single “Just Want You to Know” was aired late into a two-hour slam at GM Place, which unfolded as a sort of retrospective, complete with video breaks and attendant costume changes. “Just Want You to Know” stands out, however, either as an acknowledgment of the group’s senescent demographic or an act of desperation. It’s a guitar-driven number with an admittedly funny video that goofs on Heavy Metal Parking Lot, in which the boys appear as a hair-metal band called Sphynkter. Read more |

Backstreet's back all right, and the thousands of teenage girls who screamed for them at the Saddledome in 1999 and 2001 came back as screaming women on Labour Day 2005. Back on 2001's Black & Blue Tour, which raked in $350 million US and made them the world's highest-paid live entertainers, the five Boys appeared on risers under the stage after a dazzling CGI meteorite display, walked on suspended bridges across the arena, and soared over the crowd on surfboards. Though Backstreet's stock had started slipping then, the Saddledome filled up faster than you could say "O-Town." Four years later, the boy-band flame has pretty much been extinguished. Read more |

Australians may get a boy band fix early next year, with American pop group Backstreet Boys likely to venture Down Under on their first concert tour. After a five-year break, the boys are back "stronger than ever", says band member Howie Dorough. "We are in the midst of trying to fit Australia into the schedule after we go to Japan in January," Howie said from the United States today. "So probably end of January, early February." The Backstreet Boys - Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrel and Howie Dorough - have visited Australia for a brief promotional tour but never performed any live concert dates here. • 04.09.05 | Backstreet Boys can sing - by Annemarie |
Backstreet Boys fans were treated to two opening acts during before their performance at Sleep Train Amphitheater, Wednesday night. The first band was Seminole County, a rap-rock band out of Florida featuring a young lady, lead singer a with a strong voice to be heard. The next act was Kaci Brown, a solo hip-hop artist with a lot of style and flare, singing and dancing across the stage and the crowd loved it. And then it was time for the main event. As the lights dimmed dry ice smoke filled the stage and giant pyrotechnic explosions boomed as the boys rose on top of the stage from a riser within. During the first song "The Call" the crowd went crazy, screaming and rushing the stage as the boys danced and sang. Read more |

• 02.09.05 | Backstreet Boys and fans party like it's 1999 - by Annemarie |
The forebears of the late 1990s boy band craze, the Backstreet Boys have returned after a three-year hiatus, and local Backstreet fans showed the dreamy quintet Wednesday night that they haven't gone anywhere. With a new album, "Never Gone," and a national tour under way, the Boys are looking to climb back up the pop charts that they so dominated at the end of the last decade. Thousands of girls and boys of all ages descended upon the Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Marysville. Many of them wore homemade shirts bearing a scribbled, painted or silk-screened slogan that embodied the attitude of the night -- "Backstreet's Back." Indeed, it was 1999 all over again Wednesday. • 01.09.05 | Brian's Backstreet Bid For a Hit - by Talitha |
After record bosses slammed his solo efforts bleating about new love Delta Goodrem, Brian McFadden is begging a Backstreet Boy to write him some songs. The Irish crooner, who quit Westlife last year, has turned to BB Nick Carter for, er, a rockier sound. We hear, Bri, 25, heard of Nick's songwriting collaborations with former Motley Crue hardman Tommy Lee and tracked down the blonde singer's US number. A spokesperson for Nick told 3am: "Brian called Nick out of the blue and asked if he could write for him for his next album. Nick doesn't know him personally but he remembered him from Westlife.
